Three years ago, Spiralite Custom Rod Company was founded based on one unique principle: To affordably introduce conventional rod anglers to the advantages of fishing with a Spiral, a.k.a. Acid-Wrapped casting rod.

First introduced in the early 1900’s, the Spiral-Wrap Guide concept was based on the fact that a casting rod built with a traditional Linear Guide Pattern from Tip-Top thru the Transition Guide and onto a Baitcasting reel was and is characteristically unstable when compared to the more responsive, sensitive and well-balanced performance of a spinning rod. That’s because spinning rod design allows the blank to perform at its true potential by eliminating line-rub(slap), torque(twist) and excessive guides that combine to significantly compromise the overall performance of any traditional casting rod. The only problem with converting entirely to spinning gear is that it’s inherently difficult to cast accurately and does not perform well with the heavier line and tackle necessary to effectively target and combat hard-fighting and trophy-sized fish. Thus, the Spiral, Robert’s or Acid-Wrap came into being.

Over the years, many custom rod enthusiasts and big-game anglers “in-the-know” paid top dollar to custom rod designers such as Rich Forhan and Dennis Papike to take advantage of those superior characteristics when applied to high-end casting blanks. Unfortunately, the steep price at the time combined with the general angling public’s unfamiliarity with the concept failed to create the mass-market appeal necessary to change the industry standard for conventional casting rod design.

Recently, however, the internet and social media explosion have combined to allow for mass amounts of quality information sharing resulting in “the word getting out” about the many advantages of a Spiral-Wrapped casting rod. Driven by that growing demand, the leaders at Spiralite joined together in Appleton Wisconsin in 2014 and decided it was time to re-introduce the superior Spiral-Wrap concept to the mass market and at prices, any angler could afford.
